CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Police have identified a man and woman were found shot to death inside a car in west Charlotte late Sunday night.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Tia Mitchell, 23, and Dominique McGriff, 21, were found murdered along the 2900 block of Morning Drive which is off West Boulevard.

The CMPD received a 911 call around 11 p.m. in reference to shots that had been fired on the street.

Camilla Ervin said she was driving home on Morning Drive when she heard the gunshots.

"I'm like 'Hey, hey' and I look over and the body's slumped over," said Ervin.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Mitchell in the driver's seat and McGriff was in the passenger's front seat.  Paramedics pronounced both victims dead at the scene.

CMPD detectives say they are using every available resource to solve these murders, but the majority of these case, police say, are not random acts of violence.

"They're lifestyle choices as far as who they're choosing to hang out with, or who they're choosing to be involved with," said Rod Golding who works with CMPD's Homicide unit.

There have been 26 murders in Charlotte this year compared to 15 homicides during the same time period last year.

Police say seven of the murders involved domestic violence and seven occurred during robberies.  Six of the murders stemmed from an argument, two were gang-related and one was drug related.

If you know anything about the Morning Drive double murders, call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
