GASTON CO., NC (WBTV) - It's their job to save lives. Firefighters put their own skin on the line everyday to save strangers. It's more personal when it's one of them.

Sunday night, firefighters responded to a fire call in Gaston County. Responders from Agriculture Center and Tryonota fire stations showed up. The fire was knocked down fast, but that's when Tryonota's Captain Jim Smarr collapsed.

His co-workers now know it was a massive heart attack that took him down. But last night all they knew was that their brother wasn't breathing and his heart wasn't beating. He was dead.

After using a defibrillator device and performing CPR, Jim Smarr started breathing again. He's now sitting in a hospital bed waiting to get back to work. After doctor's performed surgery on his badly blocked heart, he's fine.

Thanks to the guys he's always called brothers, and now calls heroes.
