Levine Foundation gift

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - An arts endowment drive in Charlotte that's more than three years old has met its goal, thanks to large gifts from a local foundation and Duke Energy.

The Arts & Science Council began the $83 million Campaign for Cultural Facilities in 2006.  Much of the money is marked for the upkeep of arts buildings.

The council said Wednesday the campaign met its goal, thanks to a $15 million gift from the Leon Levine Foundation and a $5 million contribution by Duke Energy.

Bank of America and the former Wachovia pledged $15 million each when the drive began.

Levine says Charlotte is known for banking but now will be on the map for its arts as well.
