Tonight's Cover Story: US Airways merger with United Airlines?

A source tells the Associated Press that United Airlines and US Airways are in talks about a combination that would create the nation's second-biggest airline.

The deal would be modeled on the Delta-Northwest combination from a few years ago, which was a stock swap without a cash component.

US Airways and United have tried to merge before and failed.  What makes this time different?  And how would Charlotte fare in such a marriage?

Five years ago when US Airways merged with America West Airlines the airline became a stronger carrier.  Aviation reporter Jeff Atkinson talks to insiders about how that deal came together and what may be going on now.  His story is tonight at 7 on WBTV News PrimeTime.
