COPY-Woman dies after rock thrown at car; teens charged

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. (AP) — Two North Carolina teenagers are charged with first-degree murder in the death of a South Carolina woman struck by a rock thrown into a car from an overpass.

The Richmond County Daily Journal reports that 23-year-old passenger Alicia Thomas of Spartanburg, S.C., was injured when a rock crashed through the windshield as the car passed under a bridge on the U.S. 74 Bypass near Rockingham on Sunday night. Thomas died a short time later.

The sheriff's office said 16-year-old Cody Chavis of Rockingham and a 15-year-old are charged. The 15-year-old's identity cannot be released because of his age.

Chavis is in the Richmond County Jail under $400,000 bond. The juvenile is being held at a juvenile facility. It wasn't immediately known if either suspect had an attorney.
