"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
Our recent Editorial challenging Dr. Peter Gorman's cavalier attitude on advanced teaching degrees really hit a nerve.
Ms. Patrice Conlon writes:
As a former CMS teacher with an advanced degree, I was not at all surprised by Mr. Gorman's opinion. CMS is not at all concerned about the education of children, but more about what will cost them less….
Mr. Gorman has his priorities wrong and he won't attract accomplished teachers if he continues on the path he is on.
Christianne May agrees:
I am currently finishing my last semester of my mater's (master's) degree in Education Leadership at UNCC….
Teachers are already unpaid (underpaid), under appreciated, and overworked.
To have our advanced degrees tossed out the window as if we received them from opening a box of Cracker Jacks is beyond appalling.
A couple of viewers questioned Dr. Gorman's credentials:
I'm curious to know if Dr. Gorman could've gotten his position with just a four year degree…of course not!
(Mary Register)
If advanced degrees do not matter shouldn't we be addressing the superintendent (superintendent) as MISTER Peter Gorman and not as DOCTOR Peter Gorman?
(Ken O'Neal)
And finally, a challenge to the basis for Dr. Gorman's comments from Vickie Hoyle:
Thank you for pointing out that the "study" used by Dr. Gorman was flawed and incomplete in so many ways….
The student achievement he refers to is measured only for classes with EOC tests at the high school level, and most teachers with Master's Degrees don't even teach those classes….
The man is looking for any excuse to release more teachers, even after the hundreds he released last year.
We encourage everyone to Speak Out on issues affecting our communities.
Please keep your opinions coming. We'll keep ours coming as well.
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
