"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
A simple question: "Are you prepared?"
Spring-time in the Carolinas can be beautiful.
Blooming dogwoods, azaleas and longer, warmer days. But it can also bring turbulent weather.
NOW is the time to prepare for severe weather sure to come. Start with the basics:
Do you know your risk to floods or severe weather?
Can your home withstand a storm?
Do you have adequate insurance?
Emergency Management Agencies warn us not to expect help for 72 hours following a disaster.
That means... plan to be on your own.
Get a severe weather safety kit.
It should include plenty of food, water and cash. (Remember, A-
T-M's may not be working.)
Batteries and flashlights are also essential.
Medication, essential documents... passports, social security cards, anything important in identifying family members should be put in a safe place.
And, develop an escape plan.
Make sure to plan for any elderly or handicapped family members, and your pets.
Remember, disasters can come in many forms, but you can often determine the out-come.
Thorough planning NOW can save your life and others.
Take an hour this week to assess your family's risk... develop a plan and be ready.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
