Charlotte, NC (WBTV) - We were left scratching our heads...or should we say holding our nose...because of a mysterious odor coming from the manhole at West Tyvola and the ramp to Billy Graham Parkway.
The posts from our See, Click, Fix webpage prompted our investigation. Like this one which says: "If you drive (on Tyvola) over the Billy Graham Parkway overpass with your windows opened you can smell the cloud of gas."
We contacted CMUD first since it was their manhole.
Initially, CMUD thought it had crews working on it. But later discovered it had been abandoned and Piedmont Natural Gas recently requested to work on the line beneath.
This week, PNG gave us a final answer. Officials says there was, in fact, a minor natural gas leak in the old service line. Since it was brought to their attention they have since repaired it, wrapped it, and took it out of service.
What the manhole looks like now: there are no more orange cones and most importantly the manhole is now covered.
We also notice something noticeably different in the air...the next time you drive down this spot and take a breath of fresh air... Expect it to now be odor free.
