Speak Out: City Council Sexual Harassment

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

People can be forgetful.

Sometimes we could all use a reminder.

But, come on... how many of us need to be reminded sexual harassment isn't tolerated in the workplace?

That's what Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx says all his recent e-mail was --

A "polite reminder" to the 11 members of city council they shouldn't sexually harass anybody.

That notion is absolutely laughable.

At first the city attorney says he asked the mayor to send the "reminder" after a female city staffer complained about a city council member.

But, now the city attorney says the case is closed and didn't require a formal investigation.
That notion is also laughable.

We elected those council members to represent us.

And we're not allowed to know if one of them is making inappropriate passes at a city staffer?

Even more confusing is that Mayor Foxx NOW says his e-mail wasn't about a specific incident.

Yet even city council isn't buying that.

Several members have called for an open investigation of the alleged harassment complaint.

All have voted for the investigation except one.

Councilman Warren Turner says it would be a waste of taxpayer money and time.

Now here's an idea.

Let's open the windows and let in a little sunshine.

They're called "public officials," because we, the public, put them in office.

Let's have Mayor Foxx tell the public what really happened.

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
