More employers hiring temporary employees

By Derrick Rose

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Companies have opted to hire more temporary workers recently than permanent employees, a report by the U.S. Department of Labor shows. Last month, temporary help services added 48,000 jobs," the report read adding, "since reaching a low point in September 2009, temporary help services employment has risen by 284,000."

In Charlotte, the unemployment rate stands at 12.1% according to the Dept. of Labor's most recent statistics, which is 1 percentage point higher than the state average. "It's very hard out there for everybody; people that are giving jobs and people that don't have the jobs," Gia Moctezuma told WBTV.com.

Moctezuma works for Quality Personnel, a temporary employment agency in the Queen City. Both she and Vice President George Rickles agree the temporary industry has grown. Rickles said it's cheaper for companies to hire temporary workers considering some companies may still be weary about the economy turning around.

"On a temporary basis, it's a variable cost, not a fixed cost," Rickles said, "they don't have to pay benefits. It creates a lower cost for the employer which helps out the corporation, but once again, we can provide a job for these people."

For Moctezuma, the meaning goes deeper. When interviewing people who are looking for work, she doesn't view her desk as a barrier, rather a bridge she's crossed it from the other side. She too found temporary work. It was for herself.

"I was helping somebody that didn't speak English to fill out an application," she remembered, "[the worker] was like, 'Oh you speak Spanish?' and I said, 'Yeah,' and they asked me to come in and work as a temporary." Moctezuma agreed. That temp job led to others which led to her permanent position at Quality Personnel.

What better destination for someone than helping people on the same journey to their own job.
