Speak Out: Autism Speaks

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

WBTV's Editorial Board recently heard from Autism Speaks.

And WBTV is a proud supporter and sponsor of this awareness group.

On October 9 of this year, The Carolinas Walk Now for Autism Speaks will take place at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The event raises money to fund autism studies and to support those families affected... not only in Charlotte and the Carolinas, but around the world.

Why listen? Why walk? Why care? Because prevalence of Autism is growing.

In 1993, one in ten thousand children was diagnosed.

Autism now affects 1 in 110 children and 1 in 70 boys. Those numbers should wake you up.

Autism may not directly affect you, but awareness is needed.

These children and adults need help in making their voice heard.

The cost associated with the speech, social and behavioral therapies can be as much as an average American family makes in one year.

Oh, and insurance? Insurance isn't really an option.

Autistic therapies usually aren't covered.

These therapies help not only the child but also help the parents cope with raising a child to become a normal functioning member of the community.

There is  no word on what causes Autism, or how it can be prevented. More questions remain than answers.

 But, you can help!

 Get involved, help raise awareness.

Walk, donate, Speak Out. Help Autism find it's voice, help Autism Speaks.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
