Speak Out: Ballantyne Public Housing

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Ballantyne will not get public housing -- at least not right now.

In concept, spreading public housing throughout a community makes good sense.

It's only fair.

But in this case -- it was never really about housing for the needy.

In retrospect, we think the whole thing was fishy.

From the beginning, it seemed as if developers and the Housing Authority rushed it through without real research.

There were just too many questions...

Questions on cost... the impact on schools... traffic... and access to public transportation.

Republic Development Group submitted a zoning petition to the city and collected 20-thousand dollars in the process.

Two executives have since left Charlotte's Housing Authority under pressure as to how they handled the deal.

One, by the way, is the business partner of Republic Development Group who proposed the project.

Add it all up… doesn't it all sound a little fishy to you, too?

It smacks of greed, deception and deceit.

Government transparency means being able to see what your elected representatives and bureaucrats are doing with your tax money.

That's how we want the people's business done.

We all need to speak out and demand it.

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
