BELMONT, NC (WBTV) - It's not every day we get story ideas submitted on a handwritten letter. The one I got last week included a picture of a man standing next to a 5 foot tall tomato plant.
I had to investigate.
Seamore is an almost 2 year old tomato plant who grew up from a hopeless beginning. Carl Mills is the produce manager at Food Lion in Belmont. Carl found the tiny plant growing near the dumpster behind his store. The seedling sprouted up in a crack between the ground and wall.
Carl uprooted the plant and took him inside to a larger living quarters inside a big pot. No one thought Seamore would survive, much less consistently sprout new cherry tomatoes.
People laughed at Seamore when he was just getting started, now he's the talk of the store.
