"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
Privacy is dead.
We're not kidding.
We think the concept of "privacy" is gone.
Everything you do can be monitored.
Listen to these recent examples:
A North Carolina teacher is suspended after talking about her students on Facebook.
A Charlotte teacher writes a bad 35-dollar check....Her students find her mug shot online and trash her over the internet.
Didn't matter that her charges were dismissed.
A school in Philadelphia is being sued because the webcams on school-issued laptops were taping students while they were at home...and the students didn't know!Cameras are in buildings…
on street corners…
throughout parking lots.
Google Earth can take pictures of your house.
Cell phones take pictures...and video.
Your image can be recorded.
Your actions can be tracked.
Those images and actions can be easily transmitted around the world.
There's no one to blame but ourselves -- we're the "YouTube" Society.
Technology pushes us forward; we keep buying in.
Nowadays, anyone can find their "15 minutes" pretty fast.
That's our lesson in this editorial:
Take those recent news headlines as a reminder.
Think before you act.
Control your own behavior.
And warn your kids that what they put on the internet today, can affect them the rest of their lives.
Private life isn't as private as you'd like to think.
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
