2 charged with cashing stolen checks in Statesville

STATESVILLE, NC (WBTV) - Two people have been arrested and charged for allegedly forging checks at several banks in Statesville.

According to the Statesville Police Department, the alleged incidents occurred between August 31, 2009 through January 19, 2010.

Police say checks were stolen from the victim and cashed at local BB&T and Wachovia banks in the Statesville area.

Investigator Scott Reed said 23-year-old Sara Jo McDonald allegedly stole the checks and gave them to her friend, 19-year-old Brady Hatley, who cashed them.

McDonald and Hatley have each been charged with 25 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Hatley was taken into custody on Feb. 18 and is being held on an $8,000 secured bond. McDonald was arrested on Feb. 22 and was given a $5,000 secured bond.
