Speak Out: Real Heroes

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

President's Day will be observed Monday.

We'll celebrate George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Two true American heroes who did great things for our nation.

But don't you think "heroes" is a word used too loosely these days?

It describes athletes...actors...rock stars.

Anyone, really.

They're people you never have any personal interaction with…you just see them on stage…or on TV.

While some celebrities use their fame in positive ways, often times they're caught using drugs...get charged with crimes...cheat on their spouses.

The list could go on.

Take this holiday to look for the real heroes among us.

It may be a teacher.  A coach.  A parent.  A sibling.

Who are yours?

Everyone needs an inspiration...especially our youth.

In fact, look in the mirror.

You have an opportunity to become a hero right now.

Help someone with a project.  Teach her a sport.  Listen to what he has to say. Inspire them to be a hero to someone else.

The small things always make the most heroic acts.

Look at the Greensboro Four, whose story has been told often this month.

They simply sat down at a Woolworth's lunch counter in 1960.

We think they're all heroes.

They're a great example of real stars, making true hero-like differences.

We all need heroes, why not start being a hero to someone today?

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
