Speak Out: Haitian Relief Response

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

At this point, the enormity of the devastation from the earthquakes in Haiti is barely understood. Over 200,000 dead and three million homeless. The need for emergency relief is overwhelming.

Sadly, the Haitian people have lost what little they had to begin with.

Food, water and medical supplies are desperately needed.

Officials say monetary donations are the quickest and most efficient way to get aid to the victims.

Harris Teeter and WBTV asked for your help and the response has been remarkable.

From January 15th through January 31st, Harris Teeter shoppers helped raise over 6 hundred and 60 thousand dollars to benefit the American Red Cross International Relief Fund. That's well over half a million dollars in just over 2 weeks.

Charlotte area Harris Teeters alone raised more than 215 thousand – more than any other participating city in the region.

These numbers say so much about the hearts and minds of the people that live in our community.

We appreciate every penny, every dime, every dollar.

And in these tough economic times, your generosity is even more extraordinary.

From WBTV, Harris Teeter, the Red Cross and the people of Haiti - thank you for your support.

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
