Speak Out: Health Care Reform

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

A few weeks back we aired an editorial about the lack of transparency Congress displayed when crafting Healthcare reform legislation.

We clearly hit a nerve.

More responses came in for this editorial than any other we've aired in a year-and-a-half!

Some disagreed with us:

VIEWER: "You grossly mis-characterized what is going on in Washington concerning the health care bill. Surely you are educated and informed enough to know that both the Senate and House health care bills were formulated and debated in a public forum. I would also think you are educated enough to know that the ‘behind closed doors' procedure is an unfortunate necessity because House and Senate Republicans would try to kill the bill using delay tactics. Their only interest (and obviously yours) is to protect the insurance lobby and hope for political gains in November at the expense of the American people."

NICK:  Dear viewer: let me assure you that we were NOT trying to protect the insurance industry or make political gains. We simply called for transparency.

That's something President Obama himself promised during the campaign.

Other responses were supportive:

VIEWER: "Rushing to closure is ludicrous. I do not disagree there should be some reform, but what has happened to ‘we the people'? Should we not be allowed to see, hear, be witness to the proposed legislation?"

NICK: THAT was our point.

As always, the editorial board appreciates all responses and encourages everyone to continue to Speak Out -- every voice does make a difference.
