"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
How many of us have had one job – the same job – for 35 years?
That's where Peter Gilchrist is sitting right now.
35 years as Mecklenburg County District Attorney.
He's set to retire at the end of the year.
Our editorial board believes this could be a defining moment for Charlotte, perhaps impacting the city for another 35 years.
No one can file to run for the new D. A. until February 8th.
That means there are no official candidates yet.
But names are already being thrown around…
Groups of citizens already forming...
...Court Watch...Neighbors for a Safer Charlotte...Community watch groups...
...already trying to determine who they might want to endorse.
Have you ever heard of such excitement for a local D-A's race...that hasn't even begun?!
Let me be very clear to all of you – this is a sign.
This is going to be a big story this year.
As it should be.
Whoever wins will have an impact on all our lives.
The District Attorney is one of the top crime fighters in our community.
He or she is an integral point person in making sure criminals stay behind bars.
The D.A. represents the people – you and me – in court.
We want this race to be on your radar.
We hope that you care.
In a city with a revolving door of crime – where repeat offenders victimize citizens over and over again –
THIS election is crucial for our community.
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
