WASHINGTON, D.C. (WECT) - Hours before a nationwide honor of being part of the President's State of the Union speech, Carolina Beach native Kim Munley spent her day meeting with representatives from North Carolina.

Sgt. Munley will be honored along with Sgt. Mark Todd for their role in stopping the man who went on a shooting spree at Ft. Hood in Texas last year. The alleged gunman killed thirteen people and wounded several others until Munley and Todd contained him.

Munley will be a guest of First Lady Michelle Obama in her seating section this evening.

Munley began her day with a visit to United States Senator Kay Hagan's office.

"On behalf of the United States Senate, we are so proud of you," Senator Hagan said. "The fact that our President has asked you to come to the State of the Union also means the nation is honoring you tonight."

Munley is expected to meet with Congressman Mike McIntyre as well Wednesday.

Munley underwent knee replacement surgery earlier this month as part of her rehabilitation process.  She is the daughter of former Carolina Beach mayor Dennis Barbour
