Stretching Your Dollar... Returning holiday gifts

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you waited to make your holiday returns until this week, make sure you are prepared.

Return policies vary with every store, so take time to learn what you need to have with you in order to maximize your return.

Most big box stores like Target and Wal-mart will honor your return for up to 90 days.

Most will refund the money in the manner it was purchased.  So, expect cash back for cash purchases.

If you have a gift receipt, many stores will give you a gift card to spend with their company online or at a store.  The hardest thing to return might be your most expensive gift.

Many stores have very tight return policies for electronics.  Many will charge you a restocking fee for returns.

For example, Best Buy will charge you 15 percent of the purchase price and you only have 14 days to make that return.

The best advice is to make your phone calls or check the company's web site before you brave the winter's cold to return that present.
