"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
There is a lot of evil in our world.
Terrorist bombs slaughter more than 100 in Baghdad – many of them women and children.
A lone gunman shoots down a dozen of our finest in Ft. Hood, Texas.
Closer to home, a pregnant teenager is murdered at a school bus stop.
Financiers cheat their clients out of billions of dollars.
Politicians and sports stars cheat on their wives.
We feel cheated when we can't trust our leaders and idols.
And yet, there is a lot of GOOD in our world.
National companies and home-grown businesses donate millions to local charities.
Families fill boxes with toys for tots…
…and children toss nickels and pennies into Salvation Army kettles.
Parents go to work each morning; then come home, prepare supper, help with homework, and tuck their kids into bed. Spouses kiss each other goodnight.
This is the time of year when we come together with family and friends, count our many blessings, and plan for our futures.
We pray in churches, synagogues, and mosques, and ask for divine guidance.
And while I hope that 2010 will be a much better year for all of us, there are no guarantees.
But no matter what may lie ahead for us, this I assure you: Evil cannot endure.
"The wrong shall fail…the right prevail…with peace on earth, good will to men."
"Merry Christmas," from all of us at WBTV.
