A winter wonderland in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - This winter Charlotte will have snow on the ground from now through as late as mid-March...but only in one spot.

For the first time in its history the city will have a $1.8 million dollar snow park.

It's being built behind SouthPark Mall at Symphony Park, a place better known for the popular summertime Pops in the Park concert series.

Snowpark will use two portable ice plants to make up to 100 tons of ice per day which it will then crush into snow - they started practicing the process Wednesday.

And over the next few weeks, they'll make enough snow to blanket a football field, creating a sledding run of about 300 feet.

It certainly won't feel like you're in Charlotte, a town that only averages a few inches of snow a year.

The cost isn't cheap -- $35 bucks will buy you two hours of sledding, tubing, snowboarding, or just playtime in the snow for kids.

Right now SnowPark USA is selling tickets online for a temporarily discounted price of $30.
