"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
The holiday shopping season is here. The sales will be EVERYwhere and EVERYone will be looking for the best deal. These days, a lot of us do our shopping online. But this season, we encourage you to also consider shopping right in your own community.
Why? Because this year is different. The recession has had a tremendous impact on all of us. People are out of work, and many businesses have gone under. Between now and the end of the year, it's going to be make or break time for a lot of them.
When you shop locally, you're supporting your neighbors. The people who live right in our community…maybe right down the street. And keeping businesses up and running is good for our cities and towns.
When you purchase products locally—at the shop around the corner, or even at a national chain—You keep money in our region, help people keep their jobs, and build the local tax base.
Another way you can make a difference this season is by donating to area charities.
They are struggling like never before, and need our help more than ever.
Giving in any way you can this season will be critical.
So, as you and your family celebrate this holiday season, please consider keeping your dollars and your spirit local. It's a gift for which many of your neighbors will be very grateful.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" – tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
