Speak Out: Revolving Door of Crime

Posted: Updated:

“Speak Out” is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Police say call it a blatant fact...

If you commit one crime, you are likely to commit another.

Repeat offenders are one of the biggest problems in our community --

Ankle monitors are slapped on some of those who get out of jail while awaiting trial.

It's a way, officials say, to monitor the worst of the worst and keep them from committing another crime.

But in the last two years, several people being monitored electronically have been charged with heinous offenses.

Police say Terrence McBride shot someone while wearing his bracelet.

Keon Rorie was accused of raping someone while wearing his bracelet.

And most recently Matthew Morgan was accused of invading an elderly couple's home while wearing his bracelet.

The bracelets have GPS.

Are these crooks just foolish?

Don't they know they'll be caught?

Or, maybe a better question is, do they just not care?

Think about the cycle.

Think about this revolving door of crime.

And now, think about a solution.

Where does it start?

With city leaders?

Police?

The justice system?

Us?

Our call to action in this particular SpeakOut is directed right at you --

Demand that our community recognize this repeat offender problem.

And now, figure out what to do about it.

Step-by-step... what do you think is the solution?
