Good News: Hope for Pope

LENOIR, NC (WBTV) - The "Hope for Pope" campaign is turning wrists at Hibriten High School green.

The lime-green bracelets sell for $2 a piece and the profits go the towards Ashlyn Pope's medical bills.

The 17-year old Senior at Hibriten was riding in the passenger seat while her father was driving. Troopers say the man who swerved in front of their car was drunk.

Looking at the mangled wreckage of the car, it's hard to understand how Ashlyn could be alive. She's been in the hospital for more than 3 weeks. She suffered several broken bones and a broken jaw. Doctor's said she might not make it. But her classmates are offering "hope".

The wristband fundraiser was the idea of 16 year old Kali Harwood. Kali barely knows Ashlyn, but still says she looks up to her.

3000 bands have already been distributed. Ashlyn is slowly getting better, with the support from an army of friends and a community of caring.
