Speak Out: Keeping Children Safe

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Today is Halloween.

And many of you loving, responsible parents will take your children trick or treating.

You'll protect them in your neighborhood.

You'll check their candy before they dive into it.

You'll keep them safe...today.

But what about tomorrow?

These are different times from when you and I grew up - often dangerous times.

Young girls are falling prey to older men. They're having babies before they're even teenagers.

Young boys are being sucked into gangs...or committing crimes with their thug "friends."

And our children are dying...victims of gun fights, drug abuse, even suicide.

Parents, talk with your kids...not TO them, WITH them.

LISTEN to what they're saying. Ask that extra question.

Know who they're hanging out with, what they're doing.

Give them the benefit of your experience - even if they don't always want it.

Sometimes it's as simple as spending time with your children, doing things together. Not just saying you love them, but showing them.

And don't be afraid to say "NO." You're not your child's best friend; you're his or her parent. Act like one.

It may not always be easy, but it's the most important thing you'll ever do.

And you might want to pray that next Halloween, YOUR child will still be here.

Some parents won't be so lucky.

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
