Justice town hall meeting

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - District attorney Peter Gilchrist and other officials in the justice system answered questions Wednesday night about how the justice system works.

WBTV's Molly Grantham moderated the town hall meeting in Unversity City.

The D.A. and other lawyers said very little about specific cases, but Gilchrist did address a recent dust-up with the police department on the arrest of Royce Mitchell.

Mitchell was charged with raping his adopted sister, Tiffany Wright, but those charges were dropped when DNA tests proved he wasn't the father of her baby. She was shot and killed while waiting for her school bus.

Gilchrist reitterated that despite what police said in a press release, his attorneys had contacted the detectives in charge and did let them know they were going to have to drop charges against Mitchell.

Another topic that came up was about repeat offenders and bond reduction, and the difference of probable cause versus "beyond a reasonable doubt."
