Good News: Honoring WWII veterans with a flight to Washington

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -- Today 120 members of "The Greatest Generation" are on their way to Washington, DC for the John Hanford Flight of Honor.

Hanford was the brother of former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole.

He served on board an aircraft carrier during World War II.

Hanford died in 2008.

This morning's flight was a way to honor him and other veterans from the Charlotte area.

Bill Lawson is a veteran. He says "it's very emotional for veterans, particularly for those who've never been to Washington to see these memorials. It brings back memories because you realize a small percentage of veterans are still living."

The honor flight returns to Charlotte Tuesday night.
