"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board is under fire lately as it considers re-drawing assignment boundaries.
Parents and students caught in the middle of these changes are *fired up*.
Mint Hill moms and dads want their children to exclusively go to the new Mint Hill High School.
That's not happening.
Parents at Eastover Elementary, Myers Park and East Meck High are still in discussions over where their kids will go.
We realize some C-M-S schools provide a better opportunity to learn than others.
But the way to make that better isn't by relocating kids... it's by adding more parent involvement to struggling schools. And for CMS to make sure every school is equipped.
If you are a C-M-S parent who believes your child can only learn in a certain type of school... look at yourself.
Make sure you're not relying too much on your child's surroundings and not enough on your participation with their educational needs.
No matter the school, there will be challenges.
That just goes along with the learning process.
But a school is what the faculty, students and parents make of it.
Parents... don't give up fighting for what you want and believe to be true.
But if you don't win the boundary battle... and your child is moved against your better wishes... get even more involved with their education.
Fight like hell to make their new school a place of pride.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
