Ways to protect yourself online

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The internet turns 40 years old this year.  While there is the opportunity for more great content online, there is also increased opportunity for scammers to steal your personal information.

Cyber expert Theresa Payton shows us how we can "celebrate" this milestone birthday while protecting ourselves online.

Payton recommends four ways to celebrate.

Follow the ABCs of protection:  Always Antivirus; Block Bad Web pages; Carefully chat when online.

Have a contest:  Have a family or workplace contest and see who scores the highest on the cyber games found at http://www.onguardonline.gov/games/overview.aspx or http://cups.cs.cmu.edu/antiphishing_phil/new/index.html

Increase your awareness:  Encourage your family, work, and schools to celebrate the Internet's 40th birthday and Cyber Awareness month in October by becoming more aware. You can download free resources such as posters and flyers to help you do this at the following three websites:

Protect important files:  Back up important files by copying them onto a removable disc, and store it in a safe place.  If you aren't sure how to do that, watch Theresa's demonstration video.  It's an exclusive web extra at the top of this page.
