GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A 16-year-old girl was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Stanley Sunday evening.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Brittany Johnson was traveling northwest on Price Road near Mauney Mill Road when she drove off the right side of the road and struck a ditch.

Her vehicle then went airborne and struck a utility pole.

Johnson, a student at East Gaston High School, died on the scene.

A state trooper said Johnson was distracted by her cell phone and was apparently texting when she ran off the road, hit a ditch, went airborne and slammed into a power pole.

Johnson's grandmother shared a somber warning for other teens who might consider texting while driving.

"I hope they learn their lesson and don't put their families through what we're going through now, don't text and drive it's not that important whatever they have to say you can find out in 10 minutes when you stop," said Helen Anderson.

Effective December 1st, texting while driving will be illegal in North Carolina.

If you're caught texting behind the wheel, you could face a $100 fine.
