CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - While we cannot control what happens on Wall Street, we can control how we take care of ourselves in this recession.
Doctors say the recession is leading to more weight gain which only adds to the stress of coping in this economic downturn.
Dr. Matthew Acampora is with the Center for Nutrition and Preventive Medicine in South Charlotte. He is seeing more patients who are struggling with their weight.
"People are on tight budgets, and they're gravitating more and more to fast foods and prepared foods that have a lot of hidden fats," Acampora said.
He encourages his patients to take advantage of the resources and information available via the Internet. For example, you should look online regularly to see what specials your grocery story is offering.
Acampora also recommends you plan for the entire week and make a list of what you will eat. Once the list is made, he says you shouldn't stray away from it.
Acampora says his family has started having cooking parties. He says it is a great way to get everyone involved and to help your kids learn about healthy choices.
If you plan ahead, you can have your entire week's worth of dinner in the freezer and ready when you get off work Monday night. Happy cooking!
