Speak Out: Finish I-485

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

When it comes to parceling out road money, the "Good Ole' Boys" in Raleigh seem to have formed the "ABC Club" - Anywhere But Charlotte.

We've already told you about the partial Fayetteville loop which carries a paltry 9,000 cars a day.

Now we have learned that construction contracts have been awarded to yet another RALEIGH expressway.

This 19-mile stretch should be open by 2012.

It is slated to be the state's first toll road...

But it's being funded BEFORE any tolls are collected.

Thank you, taxpayers.

Speaking of toll roads, there's lots of discussion lately about the proposed Garden Parkway in Gaston County.

Some say it will relieve future congestion... others call it a waste of money.

Our board has no objection to building highways that will pay for themselves.

But get this - the state of North Carolina will contribute $35 million EACH YEAR in "gap funding" to cover any construction shortfalls.

Potentially for four decades!

And while this is fought over... I-485 sits idle.

Charlotte can't get a dime to finish that never-ending project.

It has been in the works for 20 years.

Hey legislators!

Hey Governor!

Here's a novel idea... before you go financing any more new highways around the state, how about finishing the one you started in Mecklenburg County?

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
