Strong thunderstorms expected in the WBTV viewing area

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall will affect northern Iredell and southeastern Alexander Counties through 6:45 pm.

At 5:39 pm, National Weather Service doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing hourly rainfall rates as high as 2 inches per hour near Stony Point or 7 miles northwest of Statesville.

People in northern Iredell and southeastern Alexander Counties including the Stony Point area should monitor the weather situation closely. Listen for possible warnings and be prepared to take appropriate action.

Heavy rains may flood low lying areas such as ditches and underpasses. Avoid these areas and do not cross flooded roads. Water levels of small streams and rivers may also rise.  Therefore, seek higher ground if threatened by flood waters.
