CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Less than two weeks after being rescued from a man who wanted to sell her to a circus, Lilly the 5-legged wonder pup is scheduled to have her extra leg removed.

Allyson Siegel, the puppy's new owner, says the surgery will take place on July 29th.

A veterinarian who specializes in surgery will attempt to take off the extremely rare deformity.

Surgery should be routine, but Siegel says recent vet visits have discovered Lilly has both male and female genitals.

Doctors are concerned they may find more misplaced parts during the amputation surgery.

The vet bills are mounting for Siegel who paid $4,000 just to rescue the dog, but support has come in from all over the world.

Siegel says dozens of people have sent donations to a special fund set up with the Animal League of Gaston County.

If you would like to make a donation, mail checks to The Animal League of Gaston County, P.O. Box 55065, Gastonia, NC, 28056.  You should write "Five legged puppy" in the memo line.

Another fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, July 24th at The Dog Bar in Charlotte's NoDa neighborhood.  The bar is located at 3307 North Davidson Street, Charlotte, NC, and the event will begin at 6 p.m.  The owners will donate $1 from every beer sold to help pay for Lilly's vet bills.
