Speak Out: American Made Patriotism

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

I'm about to say something you've all heard before. This time, really listen to the words.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The Pledge of Allegiance has been around since 1892. It's about respect, unity and American pride.

So this July 4th, when you salute the flag...take a quick check of the flag itself. Look for the tag. See where -- see what country -- your American flag was made.

It's a small act, but one big in symbolism.

Other countries started an increase in production of American flags after September 11th...it was a supply and demand issue. So many Americans were buying them, importers saw a chance to make money.

Nowadays, you can find not just flags...but all kinds of red, white and blue products made in Mexico, Thailand and China. Other places profiting off our patriotism.

It's something to think about this patriotic holiday. Now is the time to celebrate our independence and to support the United States of America...and the Republic for which it stands.

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
