You might have heard...things are a little rowdy in Burke County. It all centers around decisions made by school board politicians. Check out the chain of events:
In April, the Burke County school board terminates a popular superintendent but gives no reason....the community is outraged.
Soon after...uproar over a school board member sending racists emails consisting of the "N" word.
Days later a board member resigns.
Then the superintendent sues for breach of contract.
Crowds at school board meetings are so big -- and passionate - security is on-hand.
Once, 9-1-1 was even called.
Most recently is the news the board can't decide who should fill the vacant school board seat.
What a mess. And -- really -- what a financial burden to the county. Several lawsuits have been filed.
This shows how important it is to research candidates before you vote for them.
Some Burke County school board members are up for re-election this year. Remember, Burke County voters, you hold all their power in your hands.
We think that Burke County school board members need to give the reason they are getting rid of the superintendent. If it's a legitimate reason in your mind, don't hide behind secrecy.
Once you announce the 'why,' maybe you can refocus on educating students and not conducting a media circus.
