"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
As a father, I can honestly say that being a parent is THE most important job of your life.
From the moment your son or daughter comes into this world, it is your responsibility to care for your child AND take an active role in developing the adult they will become.
Easier said than done, right?
We are all guilty of letting the stress of everyday life weigh heavily on our shoulders. It can take priority over the things that matter most. The simple truth is that the reward that comes from being a father is better than any promotion at work.
And the silly ties and coffee mugs that your children give you tomorrow will make you smile on the worst of days.
Giving and receiving the ties and mugs on Father's Day is the easy part. Listening to our parents is not always so easy.
Fathers are notorious for providing "tough love" that always stings at first. As we get older, we know that "sting" comes with the wisdom of experience only a parent can have to show us exactly what we need.
If you are not a father, but feel that you could fill the role of a "dad" in the life of a young person, there are great ways to get involved through the "Big Brothers-Big Sisters" organization. There are lots of young people out there that could use your praise, advice and maybe "tough love" as they grow.
Tomorrow, as we celebrate, take the time to embrace your role as a father, or to let your father know you appreciate all he has done to help you along the way.
Happy Father's Day!
