Cover Story: Bank account takeovers

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - WBTV On Your Side warning you about people hi-jacking bank accounts in Charlotte.

CMPD alerted us to two cases of what they call Bank Account Takeovers.

There are two victims so far.  They've reported thousands of dollars disappeared from their bank accounts.

Police say the three suspects are making counterfeit checks with the stolen account information and cashing them.

Police still aren't sure how these bank account hijackers are working over victims.

The best advice, be on your guard.

Beware of Internet "phishing" expeditions, such as e-mails that look like they're from a real bank or credit card company, but which are actually attempts to trick you into filling out fake forms revealing account numbers and pin codes.

Never click on a link sent to you by someone you don't know.  It could infect your computer with a virus or send you to a bogus web site, where again, you can unsuspectingly enter confidential information.

And know that criminals can try these same kinds of scams over the phone as well it's called "voice phishing."

Never give a cold caller confidential information.
