"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

End of Grade testing is this week....School is almost out.

What are you going to do with your children?

It's important to get your kids involved in something.

Why?

Watch this...

(VIDEO FROM YMCA OF GREATER CHARLOTTE:)

  "This summer

   Thousands

     thousands

   of local kids

   will be

   out of school.

   Many will spend

part or all of their day

   unsupervised.

   Some kids might find

   trouble

   violence

   vandalism...

   experiment...drugs...cigarettes...alcohol...

   connect with a gang.

What if all they need to avoid

   trouble

   is a better choice?

   Play

   Sports

   Clay

   Sketch

Paint...friends...connect with a positive role model.

Kids will do the right thing if given better choices.

You can give them a choice...

You can give them a chance."

Catchy, huh?

That video is from the YMCA - the leading summer camp group in our area.

But there are hundreds - and when I say hundreds, I mean hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of other camps and activities out there.

(Click on the YMCA video link to the right for a sample of what's available.)

A list and comprehensive database is on WBTV.com right now.

We've also posted information about financial aid and scholarships for various camps.

Go to WBTV.com...Click on "In Your Community"...Then click on "Summer Camps/Activities."

No matter your situation, we think it's important for you to help keep kids active AND safe!

Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out."

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
