"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
In the 1976 movie, Network, a fictional newsman implores viewers to shout from their windows: "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
Well, that seems to be happening in our community.
In the last month alone, you railed against excessive government spending and high taxes...
You decried the senseless violence which killed yet another promising, innocent teenager...
You demonstrated against - you were even arrested for! -- protesting the expansion of a North Carolina power plant...
And you rallied around a school superintendent you felt was unjustly removed from his position.
Those are just 4 examples.
There are dozens more.
Point being, people are speaking out more and more, and we think that's a great thing.
Does it always mean the issues are resolved the way you like?
No.
But it does get your point heard - by government officials, by private industry, and by your fellow citizens.
Over the past couple months, you've got people thinking.
Your ripple of protest can become a wave of dissent.
Consider the alternative - If you'd said nothing, done nothing, what would have happened?
Absolutely nothing. Status quo; no change.
And so we say again: speak out on the issues that concern you.
Write letters, make calls, go to meetings.
We hear you.
Rest assured, you ARE making a difference.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
