"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
Weeks ago we aired a Speak Out editorial about the United Way.
Stop dragging your feet, we said.
Open your books fully.
We're now adding another request:
Ask questions.
Former United Way C-E-O Gloria Pace King is accused of spending large amounts of money on trips, meals and "extras."
Things like Panthers tickets and high-end hotel rooms.
King's attorney says the board approved all her expenses.
Some former board members say that might be true...but they didn't know the details about each expense.
To that we say..."Why not?"
Why didn't you know details?
You're supposed to ask questions.
Don't just go with the flow.
Know what you're voting for.
Make sure you understand.
King was well-known as a great fundraiser.
Some of her board members represented United Way member organizations.
Could it be they didn't want to cross her for fear it would affect how much money their charities would get?
Maybe.
But even so...even if it's tough to stand up to someone in charge...even if that person has an intense personality...
That's your job.
It's your job to know what you're approving.
You, the board, are the checks and balances.
Even if it's difficult, you must question what you aren't sure of.
Especially -- especially!, we say -- if it's charitable donations you are helping spend.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
