"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
School boards all across North Carolina are saying...
"Show us the money!"
We're asking..."What's the holdup?"
Superintendents say there is another pot of "untouched" federal stimulus money out there.
That money is intended to support the classrooms.
School chiefs say they are waiting for the governor and state government to decide how to distribute these millions and millions of stimulus dollars approved weeks ago by Congress.
Within a matter of days school districts will be voting on their budgets for next school year.
They'll have to vote knowing extra money is out there with their school district's name on it.
They'll know that money could be used to buy new textbooks, save teachers' jobs or support other educational services...and yet...they'll have to vote not being able to depend on it.
We think it's ironic.
It's ironic the state wants us to pay our taxes on time and fulfill our obligations in a timely manner.
But when it comes to returning the responsibility, they take their time.
Politicians...you were elected to serve the people.
You were elected to make lives better.
We say communicate with the school districts immediately...figure out the stimulus money and let superintendents stop playing guessing games.
Because WBTV is "On Your Side," we encourage everyone to "Speak Out" - tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
