Speak Out: Domestic Violence

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Pushing, yelling, hitting...

Constant  threatening.

These are symptoms of abuse.

If it's not stopped in its tracks early, it could lead to tragedy.

Just a few weeks ago police charged this man with shooting and killing his teenage girlfriend.

She was an Olympic High School cheerleader.
Police call it domestic violence.

That's a perfect example of a violent relationship starting earlier than anyone expects.

Parents, please take note.

One out of three teenagers is a victim of domestic violence... One out of three.

Recently staff from Charlotte Mecklenburg schools talked with boys and girls in middle school about the signs of abuse.

The question was asked if they ever witnessed abuse... almost all of them raised their hands.

One even confessed he knew of domestic violence happening between a boyfriend and girlfriend at school.

We say enough is enough.

If you are in a relationship that causes you harm.... walk away.

Teenagers if you are in a relationship where someone has to control you... walk away.

And if you know domestic violence is happening in a friend's life, or if you are in a relationship that is abusive, get  help... call United Family Services at 704-332-2513.

It could be the break up that saves your life.
