Speak Out: Desperate Times

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Desperation is not a tangible thing. Only...It's starting to feel like it.

You can touch it. You can see it. If desperation could talk, we'd hear a loud chorus of people speaking that language.

I bet you know at least one person who has lost their job because of the economy. You may know several.

Positions are being eliminated. Unemployment is high. Money is tight. Times are tough.

What can you do about it?   Well, if you are employed -- there are two things. First, consider yourself lucky, fortunate, blessed.  Second, start looking to help others. These are our neighbors, our family... and so many of our friends.

Nearly ten out of every 100 Americans are unemployed. These folks aren't loafers trying to take advantage of the system out there looking for work -- There is incredible talent searching for a job.

Help them. It doesn't need to be in dollars and cents -- It can be in time and networking.

If you know someone who lost their job, ask how they're searching for a new one. Offer to look at their resume. Send out emails on their behalf.  Or... very easily... just listen to how they're going about the process. Some of you might discount this. I know that's likely. I also know that if this helps just one person, then the past 75 seconds was our way of practicing what we just preached.
