BELMONT, NC (WBTV) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol cited a Pageland, SC, truck driver for causing a multi-vehicle crash which happened on I-85 Monday afternoon.

The wreck occurred in Gaston County near the Belmont Abbey exit (26) around 1 p.m.

The crash involved a tractor trailer, a SUV, a police car, and a pickup towing a trailer full of wood.

When the driver of the pickup noticed his trailer had a flat tire, he pulled into the emergency lane.

He unhitched the trailer and left it to retrieve a part.  A short time later, he returned to the trailer.

Belmont Police Officer Eddie George stopped his patrol car and activated his emergency lights while the driver was repairing the trailer tire.

An SUV driven by Janet Sabucco of Gastonia and a tractor trailer driven by Larue Ollie Williams of Pageland crashed into the back of the police car.

Officer George and Sabucco suffered serious injuries and were transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Main in Charlotte.

George was released from the hospital Monday evening and Sabucco was released on Tuesday.

The highway patrol cited Williams for failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision.
