Top StoriesSuspect's Bond Reduced in Shooting CaseThere are serious questions about our local justice system are being raised this afternoon regarding how our courts work. Eric Sprouse was shot when a group of men tried to rob him at Dilworth Billiards in Charlotte. Now, a judge has made it easier for one of the suspects to get out of jail. That man, Cedric Gaston is a repeat offender. Gaston has at least 30 charges here in Mecklenburg County. On Wednesday, a judge reduced his bond from $190,000 to $30,000. But in reality, Gaston will only have to raise $3,000 to bond out of prison. Sprouse says it's not fair considering his injury. "I was shot in the side, with a 40 calibre, that came out my back and the top of my thigh," he said. So far this year, Charlotte Mecklenburg police officers have arrested 177 robbery suspects, 87 are out on bond. Court leaders say the issue boils down to jail space. There aren't enough cells to keep people locked up. |
