CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) and the ATF are joining forces to fight crime street in some of Charlotte's higher crime neighborhoods.

The CMPD say they will saturate these drug-infested neighborhoods until the alleged drug dealers and users don't feel safe anymore.

Right now, officers are concentrating on the Belmont and Villa Heights neighborhoods.

These are just the first communities in the county-wide plan to put criminals on the run.

CMPD Chief Rodney Monroe told WBTV the new operation will make everyone safer.

"These are the places we know some violent offenders and drug dealers are living," Monroe said.

Captain Demetria Faulkner Welch has only been the Captain of the Eastway Division since November.  She was even surprised to see all of the drug and gun activity in the Belmont Villa Heights neighborhood.

"All you see 24-7 are people hanging out on corners doing drugs," Captain Welch said.

Cops have seen enough of this criminal activity and they're teaming up with the ATF.

Both agencies will saturate these neighborhoods with cops until the criminals are arrested.

Belmont Villa Heights will be the first neighborhood to see the new partnership between the two agencies.

The Belmont Villa heights neighborhood falls under the confines of the Eastway Division.  That division posted the fourth largest crime reduction out of CMPD's 13 divisions so far this year.

CMPD and the ATF hope that statistic will soon change.
