CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Conover woman is in jail in Charlotte accused of trying to murder her baby girl inside the Levine Children's Hospital.
Meredith Stilwell, 21, is accused of trying to smother 11-month-old Alexa. Stilwell is charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse.
According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, employees at the hospital called police after determining that baby Alexa had been abused.
Scott Stilwell, who is Meredith's husband and Alexa's father, says Alexa has been in the hosptial six months out of the 11 she's been alive. She suffers from a brain development condition.
Scott Stillwell says Alexa had been in the hospital again for two weeks prior to the alleged attempted murder.
He thinks the pressure had gotten to his wife and that she had some kind of mental breakdown. He doesn't believe his wife wanted their baby to die.
"In my mind, I don't see that she would ever want to kill our daughter," said Scott. "I think, hopefully, we can get [Meredith] the help that she needs."
